My travel to Giant’s Causeway | Northern Ireland

Updated: Mar 5, 2021

I’m Pauline, the French student who lives in Dublin. I I came previously in Dublin in 2018 for one year and half. I wanted to visit the whole country before coming back to my native country. I will tell you about my trip in Northern Ireland.

Day 1 | Giant’s Causeway | Dunluce Castle | Carrick-a-rede rope bridge

Giant’s Causeway

Rocks and the sea at Giant's Causeway
Giant's Causeway

The Giant's Causeway is made up of some 40,000 large black basalt columns that rise up from the sea. ... During a period o intense volcanic activity, the lava rapidly cooled and differences in cooling rates led to the formation of hexagonal basalt columns.

This is absolutely incredible to see!

How to get there?

We rent a car at Dublin airport for the weekend (more or less €60). The entrance fee for the natural park is £12.50 and you can check the opening hours here.

You can also take a bus tour, that will get you to all the places I described, in one day. (more or less €60 a day)

Dunluce Castle

Only 3min away from the Giant’s Causeway, this castle is a ruin on a cliff. The view is amazing from there. Definitely worth to visit if you are nearby!

Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge

The highlight of the day! Just near Giant’s Causeway. We took that bridge, that is 30 metres above the sea, and only 8 persons can cross at the same time. If there is wind, the bridge is moving! The view is spectacular. You have to book in advance, only a limited number of people can cross the bridge each day.

Where to book?

You can check the opening hours and call them to book in advance.

Day 2 | The Dark Hedges | Winterfell

The Dark Hedges

The Dark Hedges

This is an avenue of beech trees that served for the movie Game of Thrones. The trees are nearly 250 years old. This is the place to take many pictures!

Winterfell

On the way back to Dublin, we had a stop at Winterfell Castle. There are nine Game of Thrones filming locations on the site, all within walking distance of each other. The tour takes approximately 3km. I liked that medieval atmosphere.

Where to book?

This is not necessary to book in advance. If you take the bus tour, the entrance fees are included in the price.

Regarding my trip, as I said, we rented a car, because we wanted to stay longer. Most of the people are taking the bus tour, which is of great quality/price, and also because you have someone to explain things to you.
