International Students are often faced with the puzzle that is getting insurance before they make the move to Ireland. Here are your top questions about insurance answered! 

Before travelling to Ireland, do I need to buy private insurance?

International Students who are enrolled on a course for one academic year(12 months) or less are required to buy their own health insurance and you can choose to buy from your home country for your first year in Ireland and after that, you must purchase health insurance from an Irish insurance provider.

Where can I buy my health insurance & how much will it be?

 

You can purchase your health insurance from the following providers based on your own budget. The minimum requirement of the cover is a minimum of €25,000 for Accident and €25,000 for Disease. The price starts around 150 euros or more:

  1. Halligan Insurance

  2. VHI

  3. Study&Protect


Alternatively, you can also use a comparison tool from the Health Insurance  Authority to customise your needs and choose the best insurance cover for you.

How can my insurance policy work?

​

You can get some portion of the money back for your hospitalization, which is subject to your policy cover. Also, You will use the proof of medical insurance for your Irish study visa application before travelling and IRP card application while you are in the state.
